This is in lieu of Bookish (and not so Bookish) Thoughts this week, but you can still link up below to participate!
So, my students found my blog. And I panicked. My husband said I was overreacting. In retrospect, I guess I was.
Why I thought I could fly under the radar for this long is beyond me- I guess I had good luck for awhile and I figured it would continue. Wishful thinking.
And then I started thinking about what I'd need to pull down before going live again.
The pornographic pictures?
Oh wait, there aren't any.
The offensive comments about my students?
Oh wait, all I do is say how much I love them.
The posts about my drug use?
Oh wait, I've never even smoked pot because I'm too scared (asthma, guys!).
The deep dark secrets about my past?
Oh wait, those are only on my anonymous blog (kidding).
Yes, I drop the occasional eff-bomb. And I do make sexual innuendos. I've referenced the need for wine. But I'm thirty years old and I'm not suggesting minors partake in any of it. For the most part I write my posts with the knowledge that this could happen at any time.
And it has.
So, my students read what I've written. What happens? Best case scenario- they find some great books and get excited about reading (it could happen!). Worst case- they start snap chatting screen shots of particularly corny or nerdy writing and laugh behind my back.
Hi kids. Welcome to my blog. The fact that you guys love me so much to watch my every move on the internet is flattering, really. And if you have any questions, comments or concerns, email me.
Every once in a while students tell me that they read my blog, too. But what I hear the most is how much they appreciate my book reviews. Unfortunately, it seems like I do less and less book reviews and more and more blah, blah, blah stuff. Back to the basics!
ReplyDeleteBack when you wrote about the accident some your kids were in, I wondered if that wouldn't be a post they'd find soon enough. I mean, I don't know which post they found first, but I wondered, because I knew you'd always been careful to be anonymous.
ReplyDeleteBut honestly, I agree with you - if anything, your blog is a very positive example of how the internet needn't be dangerous to our real lives.
This is going to make me sound weird, but when I was in high school, I googled my favourite teachers (nothing came up, they were pretty secretive). Point is, you've gotta be pretty awesome for your kids to look for you on the web!
Phew..I was so bummed when I couldn't get to your blog this past week. Your blog is fun and positive, so if they are reading it, it's all good. :) Hope you and Sawyer are doing great!!
ReplyDeleteI think students will love your blog!!
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure I would've freaked out too if many of my offline friends and colleagues found out about my blog (or if I was a teacher and my students found out). But like everyone else mentioned, your blog is all about books and awesomeness, so I think all will be well (and like you mentioned, maybe they'll be inspired to pick up a book or two that you've written about) :)
ReplyDeleteOh so glad you're back! I was so sad this week, I love your posts and my reading list would be a lot more boring without your blog! :)
ReplyDeleteI was wondering why your blog suddenly went private!
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy you're back. Please don't scare us like that again. I'm sure your blog will only be a positive influence on your students.
ReplyDeleteI was (selfishly) really worried for a minute there. I'm 450 pages into Night Film, and I want to re-read your review of it when I finish. Hahah! I'm glad you're back!
