Top Ten Tuesday- Loyalty

I'm a pretty loyal person- to a fault, perhaps. I get upset when sports teams trade players all willy-nilly, stand by shows when they start declining (here's looking at you, Grey's), and would cut someone if they talked shit about my family or husband. The same goes for a select group of authors. This week The Broke and Bookish ask us for the ten we'd automatically pre-order.

1. Nick Hornby- He's had a few flops, but they're book-ended with some really great ones.

2. Ian McEwan- I've never read one of his book that I didn't like.

3. TC Boyle- I love how he takes social issues and turns the into such great novels.

4. Jonathan Safran Foer- My life will only be complete when I get to go to one of his readings.

5. Ann Patchett- I need to get the rest of her books- I'm absolutely in love with the ones that I have read (Bel Canto, State of Wonder, Patron Saint of Liars).

6. JK Rowling- This may change after I read The Casual Vacancy

7. Jeffrey Eugenides- Three books, three successes.

8. Isabel Allende- I think we've talked about my love of the Mother of Magical Realism before...

9. Carlos Ruiz Zafon- His writing is this wonderful mixture of fun, intellect, mystery, and beautiful imagery.

10. Reif Larsen- He's only written one book, The Selected Works of TS Spivet, but that's all it took to win me over.

  1. I love Jeffrey Eugenides and I'm glad you liked The Marriage Plot - it seemed to be really hit or miss, but I loved it as much as Middlesex. If you like Nick Hornby and haven't read Charlotte Street by Danny Wallace, you might want to consider it.

I was one of the people who didn't like The Casual Vacancy, so I'll be curious to know what you think.

  3. You have a gorgeous blog, Christine! I've enjoyed everything I've read by Hornby and McEwan.

And speaking of Grey's, I wonder how much longer it's going to go on. That's one of the shows I'm loyal to, but it does seem that all the good ideas are going to Scandal instead.

  4. Love Nick Hornby and also Ian McEwan.

I'm undecided about Jeffrey Eugenides - I (remember) enjoying The Virgin Suicides but The Marriage Plot didn't do it for me at all. Middlesex might be the decider?!

  5. I've enjoyed McEwan's books, but he's not an auto buy for me. I've been meaning to try Eugendides, but haven't had the chance.

  6. The first time I read Bel Canto, I had a seriously deep moment with it, as much as human and book can possibly have, considering books don't have emotions.

Which Eugenides would you recommend the most other than Middlesex? I lovvveed Middlesex to bits, absolutely brilliant novel, but I haven't come across another of his works?

  7. I think I'll try TC Boyle again, I've only ever read one of his books for a book club read. Of course I've got JK Rowling on my Top Ten.

    Have a great week!

  8. Ian McEwan and Carlos Ruiz Zafon! *high-fives* I've been meaning to get around to Ann Patchett and Jonathan Safran Foer's other works (loved Everything is Illuminated). Oh, and Jeffrey Eugenides too xD

    Here's my TTT

  9. I really enjoyed The Casual Vacancy -- I think most people who disliked the book were not ready for Rowling to move onto something completely different from Harry Potter. I'm really curious if you'll like it or not, especially since Rowling is one of the only YA authors you like and this is her first adult book!

  10. If I had thought of them, Jonathan Safran Foer and Isabel Allende would also be on my list. It's just that most of the favorite authors at the forefront of my mind are not among the living. However, even if The Casual Vacancy is a great book, I just don't have an interest in reading it.
