Two blog posts in one day- it must be Monday night... The Broke and the Bookish asks us this week to suggest book for people who "like x author."
1. Mark Haddon (The Curious Case of the Dog in the Nighttime) --> Nick Hornby (High Fidelity, About a Boy, How to Be Good); contemporary British humor
2. TC Boyle (Tortilla Curtain, When the Killing's Done) --> Hector Tobar (The Barbarian Nurseries); controversial social issues in California
3. Cormac McCarthy (The Road) --> Sigrid Nunez (Salvation City); the apocalypse with simple prose
4. Jonathan Safran Foer (Everything is Illuminated, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close) --> Nathan Englander (What We Talk About When We Talk About Ann Frank, The Ministry of Special Cases); Jewish writers, family history
5. Eli Wiessel (Night) --> Imre Kertesz (Fatelessness); Nazi Germany
6. Isabel Allende (House of the Spirts, Eva Luna) --> Karen Tei Yamashita (Tropic of Orange); magical realism
7. Michael Chabon (The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay) --> David Mitchell (Number 9 Dream, Cloud Atlas); smart contemporary male writers that give you something to sink your teeth into
8. John Irving (The World According to Garp, Cider House Rules) --> Richard Russo (Empire Falls, Mohawk); nostalgic tones
9. Chuck Palahniuk (Fight Club, Choke) --> Erksine Caldwell (Tobacco Road, God's Little Acre); sometimes humorous writers in two different time periods that try to shock their reader with taboos
10. Laura Ingalls Wilder (Little House on the Prairie) --> Larry McMurtry (Lonesome Dove); westerns (and a bit of a stretch because I'm out of ideas)
I haven't read Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, but I did watched the movie & I loved it. So good! I still want to read that book and if I love it, I'll take your recommendation to read the books of the other author too. :)
ReplyDeleteI haven't read ANY of these, I'll have to fix that!
ReplyDeleteGreat list! Never heard of some of these authors but am definitely going to check them out because you've listed authors whose works I've enjoyed (Foer's Everything is Illuminated, Allende's House of Spirits)
ReplyDeleteHere's my TTT for this week =)
I really enjoyed The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night time by Mark Haddon. Nick Hornby's Fever Pitch is on my to-be read list and I didn't know he wrote About A Boy! I'm definitely going to check it out now!
ReplyDeleteI loved that you included Eli Wiessel's Night. It's one of the most moving books that I've read.
Great list :).
I'll have to refer to this! I am reading Lonesome Dove right now. I never pegged myself as someone who is interested in westerns. I took a westerns course in college because all the other slots were filled up, and I found myself really enjoying them.
ReplyDeleteTobacco Road is on my TBR list, and I loved Fight Club so I'm glad to see that both made your list :)
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed reading your list. You've reminded me that I have a collection of TC Boyle's short stories that is still on the shelf. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI love your suggestions here! Love TC Boyle, so I'll check out Hector Tobar pronto.
ReplyDeleteAwesome list. I like T.C. Boyle too and haven't heard of Hector Tobar. I'm also even more excited to read the Englander on my shelf since I love Foer.
