The Broke and the Bookish's Top Ten Tuesday instructs us to list the top ten blog posts that describe us, as a reader and a person, best. While I'm sure you've all read every single blog post I've ever put up already, here's a walk down memory lane:
1. Why Fifty Shades of Gray is a Bad Idea- This is by far my most popular post in terms of page views and I think comments. A tad snarky, a smidge fun, and a whole lot of unabashed hating.
2. Valentine's Day Edition- CILFs- In this post I talk about Characters I'd Like to, um, Fondle. Not only does it represent my overall tone, but it also shows the diverse sampling of books I've read over the years.
3. Lucky to Be Alive- I have a very complex relationship with my pets....
4.This is Why I'm Not a Writer- Still so, so true.
5. If There is a God- Where I talk about religion and compare Dumbledore to Jesus (or is it God? Christ? The Father? The Son? The Holy Ghost? I get so confused...).
6. How to Build a Library- Creating a space for my books in our new house. That room, and my collection, is still one of my favorite spaces in the world.
7. PSA for Today- My reflection on how being bipolar has impacted my family after reading Jeffrey Eugenides' The Marriage Plot. Luckily I don't suffer from the condition, but I grew up with a father who did. Borderline oversharing, but an important issue.
8. Finished, I Am- Ah, the joy that comes with finally finishing Underworld...
9. Justified- I have a serious book-buying problem. I consistently have about 50 books to be read, meaning I buy them at basically the same rate I read them. I have an Amazon Rewards card (booo, big corporations that make things so attractive for people who want good deals, hate leaving the house, and read books that can't always be found at Barnes and Nobles), which makes it even easier to get them now with the points. Sigh. So, I spend a couple hundred bucks a year on books. Get off my back already. Geez.
10. Nonfiction Nagging- This is cheating, since it's really just a search term on the blog. Over the past year or two I have made a significant effort to read more nonfiction. I've talked about things like Scientology (crazy SOBs), runners (again, crazy SOBs), vegetarians (6ish months and still going strong), antibiotic overuse (stopping being germaphobes and taking Amoxicillin for everything, people!), and whether to partake in the whole baby-making thing (sigh).
Hello Christine. I'm new to your blog but completely hooked. While I don't agree with everything you say, I agree with a lot of it! And I enjoy most. Can you tell me how tall your bookshelves are? I'm having a really hard time finding that balance in my bookshelf search. Not outrageously expensive/fairly well made/nice and tall. We won't talk about the fact that I'm a runner...
ReplyDeleteHi Tess! Thank you for your comments! I am actually a runner too- sort of. Running and I are on a little bit of a break, but I ran something like 12 halves in 15 months.
DeleteMy bookshelves are actually the Billy ones from Ikea, with an extension shelf on each. They aren't the best, but when we got our first ones five years ago they fit our price range and we're too cheap to start replacing them right now. Eventually we'll go for built ins, but for now they totally work!
Nice. Thanks. I was just looking at those and thinking they looked like good options. I wasn't sure how durable they would be. Apparently pretty durable!
DeleteThat is some serious running by the way. Nice job! I did something similar this year by running two marathons in two weeks and now I'm enjoying my 3-4 milers again.
I look forward to reading.
Great list pulling back the curtain on the blogger. I'll have to come back to read a few more. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteSuch good stuff. I just want to read all the posts! Congratulations on fishing Underworld btw. I've started twice and still haven't finished and I consider DeLillo one of my favorite writers.
ReplyDeleteDitto about FSoG - I get so many hits on my post where I basically can this book! Ditto also on your 'justified' post...but I'm too scared to reveal how many books are currently in my TBR pile!
ReplyDeleteYou are hilarious! I mean you compared Dumbledore to Jesus. Seriously? I read it, and I thought it was so true! :) I totally agree with you.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I LOVE your bookshelves! Now you need a ladder! Gawd, that's all my library is missing - a ladder - but my shelves aren't as tall :(
ReplyDeleteSecondly, amen to the 50 Shades of Grey post. Working in a book store part time, this book infuriates me. Women come in to buy it and they don't even know what it's about. They just say "my friend says I need to read this book...", and I want to say "well your friend is wrong". The book club I'm part of has switched November's book to 50 Shades...I always read every book, because otherwise, what's the point of being in a book club, but now....I just don't think I can do it. *sigh*
The "Why I'm Not a Writer" post definitely made me LOL. That is so me, too, except for I could probably just go ahead and rename it "Why I'm Not a Writer, and also Can't Accomplish Much of Anything Productive, Either." A constant theme on my blog is how I didn't get around to doing this or that because I wandered off to look at shiny things. ;-)
ReplyDeleteExcellent list - your blog is new to me, but I already *do* feel like I kind of know you!
Ha! I loved your Fifty Shades of Grey post. I read the first one, I am a librarian and I sort-of consider it part of my job to keep up on the currently popular books. It was terrible. I do appreciate the sentiment behind the "at least they are reading" thought, but it actually depressed me that so many people were raving about something so terrible. The book needed an editor and a thesaurus. I haven't been blogging enough to have an informative TTT, but here it is nonetheless.
