A Literary Christmas Tree

For the second (or third?) year in a row I've allowed my students to create literary Christmas ornaments for a small amount of extra credit (yes, I do offer an alternate assignment for those that are religiously/morally/culturally opposed). They can base the ornament off a book they've read for class (outside reading or curriculum) or the act of reading and writing in general. I must say, some of my new AP sophomores kids really struggle with the creative, open-endedness of this assignment, which is a little sad (but fixable).

I thought I'd share some of the highlights:

[The Bell Jar]

[Uncle Remus Stories]

[Sylvia Plath]

[Edgar Allen Poe]

[a totally decimated copy of The Bell Jar]

[To Kill a Mockingbird]

[Running in the Family]

  1. Such a cool idea! I love them all, but especially the very first one.

  2. This is an amazing idea! I did projects like this for my B.A. in English; it made me connect to the books in a different way than writing about them. The Bell Jar Christmas tree is my favorite. :)

  3. I really like this because it's not just a tree made of books - it took a ton of thought and can be easily reused yearly as well! Unique for sure!
